The research has enabled the authors to assess the impact of the Great War on West Norwood Cemetery using these graves as a starting point.
The talk will be in two parts:
John Clarke will outline the scope of the project and the research it entailed.
Peter Hodgkinson will follow by describing some of the war dead represented in the cemetery.
There will also be time to ask questions and buy the book at the end.

The majority of the commemorated dead are infantry (72%); just over two-thirds of those buried or commemorated at Norwood were born within 5 miles of the cemetery; 31 sets of parents lost two sons; whilst two thirds of actual burials were the result of death from sickness rather than wounds.

Dr Peter Hodgkinson is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist specialising in psychological trauma, and an independent military historian for over 15 years. John Clarke is a freelance writer. Now retired, he is a former administrator and medical librarian. He has written several books on Brookwood Cemetery including London’s Necropolis: A Guide to Brookwood Cemetery, (2nd ed. Stenlake, 2018); The Brookwood Necropolis Railway, (4th ed. Oakwood Press, 2006); An Introduction to Brookwood Cemetery, (3rd ed. 2019); Brookwood’s Mausolea, (2021); and The Brookwood Military Cemeteries, (2023). He is also the co-author (with Peter Hodgkinson) of Norwood and the Great War: Reflections on Military and Social History, (FOWNC, 2022). Together they are currently working on a similar volume covering the war dead of the Second World War.
John is the Chair of the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery. He lives in southwest London.
