Writer Isabella Beeton is buried here. She's most famous for editing Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management, which became a staple in middle class homes. Beeton was only 28 when she died in 1865 shortly after giving birth to her fourth child.
What plans are there for St Stephen's Chapel in the Greek enclosure? Works are being undertaken to make the Chapel fully accessible, and utilities are being installed to enable the Chapel to host events and activities and be available for hire.
Amongst its many unique characteristics and qualities West Norwood Cemetery is also a unique public open space. Although it’s not designated as a park, common or recreation ground, and is managed for very different purposes, it still provides an important role to the people of Lambeth and West Norwood as a vital ‘green lung’ – it’s a safe and beautiful place to visit, walk and enjoy whilst still respecting its function as a place of burial, cremation, bereavement and reflection.
Bats can be a bit of a "marmite" animal, often dividing public opinion but we feel there is something special and uniquely calming about being in a cemetery at dusk, listening closely to the air around you, whilst trying to spot these fascinating flying mammals.
